Omaha, Neb. -- Behind 21 points from sophomores Jaylyn Agnew and Olivia Elger, the Creighton women's basketball team defeated South Dakota State 72-65 on Friday, Nov. 15.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 6-3 on the season, while the Jackrabbits fell to 8-3.
Junior Audrey Faber imposed her will in the early going with nine points in the first quarter as the Bluejays raced out to a 19-11 edge at the end of the opening quarter. Down 3-2 in the opening moments, Faber delivered five straight points, then Elger quickly etched her name in the score sheet with a trifecta to make it 10-3 (5:53). South Dakota State tried to answer with a trey from Tagyn Larson, but the tandem of Faber sandwiched layups around Elger's second three-ball to push the Creighton edge to 17-6 (3:27).
Sophomore Ali Greene opened the second with two from the charity stripe, then Faber found her three-point range to push the Bluejays' edge to its largest margin at 24-11 (8:01). Holding a 29-16 advantage with 5:50 left in the second, Creighton saw the Jackrabbits come rushing back with 13 straight to knot the contest at 29-29 (2:09). Refusing to concede the lead, Agnew knocked down back-to-back shots from long range as the Bluejays took a 35-29 lead into the break.
Midway through the third the Bluejays put the game out of reach with another surge, pushing their lead 17 points at 56-39 with 2:30 left. This time it was an 11-2 run as that began with Creighton holding a 45-37 edge. Agnew kick started the run with a three-pointer, but SDSU answered with an interior bucket from Sydney Tracy. Agnew answered the challenge with another three-ball, then Elger delivered five straight.
Thanks to a 22-point final frame the Jackrabbits cut the Creighton lead to as little as seven twice in the frame, but the Bluejays held South Dakota State at bay to earn the win.
Agnew and Elger's 21-point efforts led the way, while Faber finished with 14 points. SDSU got 17 from Macy Miller and 10 from Madison Guebert in the loss.
