Creighton WBB Downed in South Point Tournament Opener, 67-66 by Washington

Las Vegas, Nev. -- Down 56-44 midway through the final period, the Creighton women's basketball team battled back to knot the game at 60-60 before falling to Washington 67-64 on Friday, Nov. 23.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 3-2 on the season, while the Huskies evened their mark at 2-2.
Trailed 56-44 with just over seven minutes to play, sophomore Jaylyn Agnew started the Bluejays on the comeback trail with a three-pointer from the right corner. Moments later Agnew pulled Creighton within seven at 56-49 (6:42) on a pulled up jumper near the free-throw line. Following a bucket from the Huskies, junior Audrey Faber and senior Sydney Lamberty connected from long range to make it 58-55 with 5:17 left. Washington tried to stem the Bluejay run with a five-footer from Kierra Collier, but the Bluejays answered with another trey from Agnew and a layup by Faber to pull event at 60-60 with 3:07 left.
The Huskies scored the ensuing four points, but Agnen connected from long range once more, then sophomore Ali Greene hit one of two from the charity stripe to tie the contest once more, 64-64 with just 51 seconds remaining. Following a Husky miss, Washington grabbed its 22 offensive rebound of the contest, then Mai-Loni Henson dropped in a decisive bucket.
A back-and-forth first quarter yielded its fifth tie at 17-17, but a 5-0 Washington run gave the Huskies a 22-17 edge. Lamberty closed the period strong with a three-ball from the left wing as Creighton trailed 22-20 after one.
Washington pushed its lead to as much as 11 early in the second (33-22), but a 9-2 Creighton run brought the Bluejays back within one possession at 34-31 (1:08). Unfortunately Washington sank two free throws prior to the half to take a 36-31 edge at the break.
The third quarter saw Washington to surge ahead by 12 once more at 43-31 (7:53) and take a 54-44 into the fourth.
Faber led Creighton with 19 points in the game, while Agnew finished with 16 and Lamberty closed with 12. The Huskies got 17 from Henson, 14 from Amber Melgoza and 10 from Hannah Johnson.
The Bluejays face #5 UCLA on Saturday, Nov. 24 at approximately 5:30 pm in the final game of the South Point Tournament.
