Omaha, Neb. -- Led by 20 points and nine rebounds from sophomore Jaylyn Agnew, the Creighton women's basketball team defeated Nebraska 64-49 on Sunday, Nov. 19.
The win was the Bluejays' first in Lincoln since the 1993-94 season, moving Creighton to 2-1 on the season. Nebraska, meanwhile, fell to 3-1 overall.
Creighton did not trail in the contest as the Bluejays traded buckets to open the game, then used an 11-0 run to seize control in the open quarter. Knotted at 4-4, senior Kylie Brown got things rolling for Creighton with a 19-foot jumper from the right side. Moments later junior Audrey Faber found the bottom of the net from 12-feet, then Brown knocked down her second jumper to make it 10-4 (5:11). Agnew got into the act with the first of her five three-pointers of the night and freshman Temi Carda capped the surge with a driving layup to push Creighton out to a 15-4 edge with 4:20 left.
Nebraska head coach Amy Williams used her first timeout to calm her squad and the Huskers responded with six straight to close the quarter with Creighton leading 15-10.
The Husker run continued at the onset of the second period as Grace Mitchell made it a one possession game with a six foot jumper. Faber responded for the Bluejays with a jumper just inside the arc, followed by a running layup from Agnew to push Creighton back out to a 19-12 edge. Nebraska closed to within three points again at 19-16 as well as 21-18, but Creighton held the lead each time. Leading 21-18 with 3:36 left in the first half, Creighton closed the period with another 11-0 run. This Bluejay surge got rolling with two free throws from Faber, followed by back-to-back trifectas from Agnew. With an opportunity to hold for the final possession, Faber knocked down a wide open three-ball to give Creighton a 32-18 lead at the break.
The Bluejays pushed their lead to much as 18 at 44-26 with 3:14 left in the third, but the Huskers responded with seven straight to close within 11 at 44-33. Creighton, however, closed the quarter with triples from Faber and senior Sydney Lamberty to hold a 50-35 edge heading to the final period.
Creighton did not allow the Huskers closer than 15 in the final period, cruising to the 64-49 win.
Agnew led the Bluejays with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Faber finished with 14 points, eight assists and seven boards.
The defensive effort of limiting Nebraska to just 49 points was the lowest Nebraska output since Creighton the 2002-03 season when Creighton downed Nebraska 52-40. The win also marked the first time since 1993-94 and 1994-95 the Creighton has posted back-to-back victories over Nebraska.
Creighton returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 21 as the Bluejays host Northern Iowa at 6:00 pm in D.J. Sokol Arena.
