Junior does well as CU's first qualifier in program history
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Creighton University junior Emily Martin finished 86th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park in Louisville on Saturday.
Martin was competing as Creighton's first qualifier in program history to reach the NCAA Championships and completed the 6K race in a time of 20:36.90. The time was near-identical to her time of 20:37.60 on the same course at the Pre-National meet on October 14th.
"This race was incredible experience," said Martin. "I am honored to represent my teammates, coaches and Creighton University on the national level and intend to build on this experience with additional confidence looking ahead to 2018."
New Mexico's Ednah Kurgat took first in the women's race with a time of 19:19.42, eight seconds ahead of Washington's Amy-Eloise Neale's 19:26.93. Led by Kurgat and three additional top-11 finishers, the Lobos claimed the national championship with 90, edging out San Francisco with 105.
A St. Charles, Ill., native, Martin improved steadily throughout the race.
She was 155th after 2K with a time of 6:45.4, then passed the 4K mark in 120th place with a time of 13:49.2. Martin moved up to 98th place by the 5K mark before a strong finishing kick saw her cross the finish line nearly 25 spots ahead of pre-meet prognostications. The top 40 performers at the NCAA Championships earn All-America honors, with Martin finishing just 25 seconds away from that distinction.
"What an incredible accomplishment for Emily not only to qualify for this race, but then to finish in the top-third," said Creighton coach Matt Rogers. "Her performance this season has set a high bar for our team in the future, but one that we look forward to chasing."

Syracuse runner Justyn Knight held off the Northern Arizona pair of Matthew Baxter and Tyler Day to grab the men's 10K individual championship. Baxter, Day and teammate Peter Lomong's top-10 finishes helped the Lumberjacks to a second-consecutive team title with 74 points, finishing ahead of second-place Portland with 127.
