Already All-Americans on the court, Jaali Winters and Lydia Dimke are up for CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades as well.
OMAHA, Neb. -- Already All-Americans for their play on the court, Creighton Volleyball standouts Lydia Dimke and Jaali Winters are up for CoSIDA Academic All-America consideration after earning Academic All-District 7 distinction from the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday.
The 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-District® Volleyball Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, with first-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees to be announced in December.
Â
The Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed on the following pages and are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and College Division. The College Division includes all NAIA, Canadian, two-year schools, and other affiliations.
District 7 includes nine states (Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming). More than 100 women were nominated in District 7 alone, with nine being named First Team selections and an additional five landing on the Second Team.
Dimke is a senior setter from Ham Lake, Minn. The communication studies major has previously been named an Academic All-Big Ten (2015-16) and Academic All-BIG EAST (2016-17) honoree, and earned Dean's List plaudits at Creighton last year. On the court, Dimke was an AVCA Third Team All-America choice last season after helping CU reach the Elite Eight. Dimke was named the 2016 BIG EAST Player of the Year after ranking second nationally with 1,454 assists. This year Dimke ranks among the top 10 in the BIG EAST in hitting percentage, assists per set and aces per set. Dimke will graduate next month.
Winters is a junior outside hitter from Ankeny, Iowa. the Business Information & Analytics and French double-major has been on the Dean's List and BIG EAST All-Academic Team each of the last two seasons for her work in the classroom. Winters was named Third Team All-American in 2015 after earning BIG EAST Freshman of the Year accolades, and last fall was named VolleyballMag.com Third Team All-American. Winters is a two-time All-Region and All-BIG EAST honoree. She's ranks sixth in Bluejay history with 1,316 career kills.
The contributions of Dimke and Winters have helped Creighton win a fourth straight BIG EAST title. Winners of 11 consecutive matches, the No. 13 Bluejays (22-5, 15-1 BIG EAST) play at Villanova on Friday before closing the regular-season on Saturday at Georgetown.
Prior to this season, Creighton had not had a First Team Academic All-District pick since Megan Bober in 2012. Bober went on to become a Second Team Academic All-American. The only previous year that Creighton had multiple First Team Academic All-District honorees had been 2006 (Abby Baumann, Emiliy Greisch).
