Junior becomes the first runner in program history to reach the NCAA meet
OMAHA, Neb. -- For the first time in school history, the Creighton Cross Country program has qualified an individual for the NCAA Championship, as junior Emily Martin was selected to race for the national title on November 18th.
Martin finished eighth out of 225 runners on Friday at the NCAA Regional meet at Iowa State Cross Country Course in Ames, Iowa, tying the school-record in the 6,000 meters with a time of 20:22.8.
The junior from St. Charles, Ill., got confirmation on Saturday of her at-large selection to the field as an individual. Thirty-one teams (the top two teams from each region, plus 13 at-large bids) are selected to compete in the NCAA Championships. After teams have been determined, 38 additional individuals per gender are selected to compete at the NCAA Championships. From those teams NOT selected in the above process, the top four finishers at each regional are automatically selected (but must have finished within the top 25 of the region).
In Martin's case, when the third-place team (Minnesota) in the Midwest Regional meet earned an at-large bid, so did the Gopher runners who finished fifth, sixth and seventh. That left Martin fourth among the remaining individuals who weren't already headed to the NCAA meet, joining Karissa Schweizer (Missouri), Sharon Lokedi (Kansas) and Aubrey Roberts (Northwestern) out of the Midwest Regionals with at-large nods.
"This truly is a watershed moment in the history of the Creighton Cross Country program," said fifth-year head coach Matt Rogers. "Emily has trained rigorously to earn this opportunity, and to see her selected is a fitting reward. I am confident she'll represent both Creighton and the BIG EAST well on a national stage."
The National meet will take place on November 18 at 9:45 a.m. Central at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The Bluejays competed on that same course on October 14 at the 2017 Pre National Invitational, with Martin taking 41st in a time of 20.37.6 against a field comprised of most of the top runners nationally. The meet will be live streamed at https://www.flotrack.org/live/3138-di-ncaa-xc-championships/signup?ref=3138-widget&next=http://live.flotrack.org/#/event/3138-di-ncaa-xc-championships, though a subscription is required to watch.
Martin's showing on Friday also earned her All-Region honors from the USTFCCCA (U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association). A total of 225 runners in each gender were recognized for finishing among the top 25 in each of the nine regions around the nation. Martin was ranked 108th nationally prior to the Regional meets by FloTrack.org, a figure expected to climb after yesterday's performance.
