Men's Soccer Plays Providence To Scoreless Draw

Creighton held a 17-9 advantage in shots after 110 minutes of play
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Creighton men's soccer team played Providence to a 0-0 draw on Saturday night at Chapey Field in Providence, Rhode Island.
With the tie, the Bluejays moved to 8-4-2 overall and 2-2-2 during BIG EAST action, while the Friars went to 4-7-3 overall and 1-2-3 in league play.
Saturday's match marked Creighton's fourth overtime match this season. The Bluejays are now 2-1-1 during contests requiring extra time during 2017.
Creighton also played to its first scoreless draw since Sept. 21, 2016 against No. 8 Denver. The match resulted in the Bluejays' first scoreless draw during conference play since Sept. 28, 2013 at No. 12 Georgetown.Â
Creighton ended the match with a 17-9 edge in overall shots and 6-2 in shots on goal during 110 minutes of action.
Noah Franke and Ricky Lopez-Espin each fired five shots to pace the Bluejays. Franke also had three shots on goal for a new career-high.
Creighton's first scoring opportunity came during the 19th minute. Julius Fohr sent a free kick towards the goal from just outside the 18-yard box but Providence's Colin Miller recorded his first save of the match with little trouble.
The Bluejays had two consecutive corner kicks during the 24th minute, but Connor Ramlo's shot off the second service from Joel Rydstrand ended up high of the goal.
During the 41st minute Franke fired a shot on frame from 20 yards out but Miller pounced on the ball for the save.Â
Providence's Mac Steeves drifted a long ball towards Creighton goalkeeper Michael Kluver as time expired during the first half and the Bluejay senior tallied his only save during the opening 45 minutes.
Creighton continued to apply pressure after halftime as Franke had opportunities during the 60th and 67th minute. His first shot of the second half forced Miller to make another save and his second went wide.
With 15 minutes remaining in regulation Franke and Lucas Stauffer each recorded shots during the same Bluejay run, but neither challenged the Providence goalkeeper.
During the 88th minute, Akeem Ward sent a shot towards the far post but Miller came up with his fifth save of the match.
Providence had one final chance during the closing moments of regulation but did not record a shot on goal. The Friars did not have a shot on goal during the entire second half.
Creighton outshot Providence 4-1 during the two 10-minute overtime periods.Â
The Bluejays played the final seven minutes of the second overtime period a man up after a Providence player received his second yellow card of the match, resulting in a red card.
During the 106th minute, the Friars had an opportunity for the game-winner, but Kluver made a diving save just outside the six-yard box on Alex Vigliotti's shot to preserve the shutout.
Kluver recorded his fifth clean sheet of the season and tallied a pair of saves during 110 minutes of game action.
Creighton entered Saturday in a three-way tie for third place in the BIG EAST standings with seven points and ended the night in fifth place with eight points and three regular-season league matches remaining. The top six teams in the final conference standings qualify for the postseason tournament.
The Bluejays will stay on the road before a match on Wednesday at Marquette. Kickoff for Wednesday's match in Milwaukee is scheduled for 7 p.m. Central.Â
