Villanova returns eight starters and 21 letterwinners from a team that went 4-14-0 last season, yet the group has been led by new head coach Chris McClain.
The Wildcats have taken to McClain's leadership, already posting six victories. Villanov, however, has been a bit inconsistent. The Wildcats opened the season with three wins in its first five matches, including a 5-0 win over Lafayette on Sept. 3. Following that match, the Wildcats dropped four of five contests. Entering a Sept. 28 match at Marquette the Wildcats were 4-6-0 and 0-2-0 in BIG EAST action. Over the ensuing three matches Villanova destroyed Marquette 4-1, dropped a 1-0 decision to Xavier and bested Seton Hall 1-0 on Oct. 5. In its last match, Villanova fell to #12 Georgetown 5-0.
Offensively Emily Kuefler amd Amanda Vocelka lead the Wildats with a combined 11 goals (six from Kuefler). The duo have a combined 24 points, adding one assist each.
Defensively the Wildcats have had Emily Harris in goal for every second this season, a total of 1,261:17. She has three shutouts this season and has limited BIG EAST, outside of Georgetown, to three goals in four contests.
Meola Earns BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week
Sophomore McKenzie Meola claimed Creighton's first BIG EAST weekly honor for women's soccer in 2017, earning the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week nod on Monday, Oct. 9.
Meola led the Bluejays to their first two points of the BIG EAST season last week with a pair of draws. The sophomore made a league-high 14 saves, highlighted by a nine-save outing at No. 12 Georgetown on Thursday afternoon. The Hoyas were limited to just one goal, despite averaging 3.2 scores per game over five BIG EAST contests and firing away with 36 shots. On Sunday against Seton Hall, Meola's only blemish was a penalty kick called in the 87th minute.
Sunday Brings a Little Extra Incentive as Bluejays Honor Graybill and Hugunin
Prior to Sunday's game with Villanova, the Bluejays will honor seniors Darby Hugunin and Mackenzie Graybill in Creighton's senior day festivities.
