Bluejays take doubles point, Huskies win four singles matches
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's tennis team dropped its home-opener against Northern Illinois, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Courts.
The Bluejays opened up the day by taking the doubles point with a pair of convincing victories. At the No. 1 position, Daniel Lopez-Rey and Harrison Lang picked up a 6-1 victory, and Aaron Chalstrom and Armando Gandini paired up for a 6-2 win at No. 2. Alex Koca and Mac Mease also recorded a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
"We came out with a lot of energy and came out and did a lot of the stuff we were working on in doubles," head coach Tom Lilly said. "Our play was strong, especially with freshmen on each court."
Northern Illinois quickly tied up the match with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles by Carlos Manzanas over Lopez-Rey.
The Huskies took the lead with a win at No. 1 singles (7-6, 6-3), but not before a strong comeback by Lang. Trailing 5-1, Lang rallied to tie the first set at 5 and took a 6-5 lead, but Georg Lundkvist tied the match and won the tiebreaker to take the opening set.
Gandini knotted the match at two points a piece with a 6-3, 7-6 win at No. 2 singles.
Northern Illinois clinched the overall match victories at the No. 6 and No. 4 positions.
Alex Koca closed the afternoon with a three-set victory at No. 3 singles. The junior dropped his first set 4-6, but took the second 6-3 before winning a tiebreaker in the clinching set.
"Credit goes to Northern Illinois; they stepped up," Lilly said. "It seemed like the matches could have gone either way, and they found ways to win.
"It was a very hard-fought match, and one that is going to make us better."
Creighton returns to the courts on Saturday with a pair of matches. The Bluejays host North Dakota at 2 p.m., and face William Jewell at 6 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
