IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Creighton men's tennis team opened the 2017 campaign with a 7-0 loss at Iowa on Saturday night.
The Hawkeyes took early control of the match with the doubles point and a trio of 6-1 victories. Josh Silverstein and Lefteris Theodorou defeated Harrison Lang and Brooks Kendall in the No. 1 doubles match, Michael Koch and Mac Mease fell in the No. 3 slot to Robin Haden and Jake Jacoby, and Aaron Chalstrom and Armando Gandini fell to Kareem Allaf and Jonas Larsen.
Gandini battled in a back-and-forth affair in his No. 2 singles opening set with Theordorou, before the Iowa junior took the first set 6-4 and completed the sweep 6-3 in the second.
Chalstrom fell 6-2, 6-3 to Allaf at No. 3, and Kendall dropped a straight-sets match to Haden. Kendall tied the opening set at five before Haden took the final two games and the momentum into the second set to pick up the match-clinching point with a Hawkeye victory in the No. 4 singles slot.
Lang dropped a well-contested first set in the No. 1 singles match, 6-4, before falling in straight-sets to Silverstein with a 6-3 decision in the second.
Jake Glazer also fell by a 6-4 margin in his opening set, but Larsen ended the No. 5 singles match with a 6-1 second-set victory.
Jacoby completed Iowa's sweep with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Creighton freshman Daniel Lopez-Rey in No. 6 singles.
