Marquette shoots 60 percent to snap Creighton's five-game win streak
OMAHA, Neb. -- Marquette shot 60 percent and placed seven men in double-figures as the visiting Golden Eagles defeated No. 7 Creighton, 102-94, in the host Bluejays first full game without star point guard Maurice Watson Jr.
Marquette (13-6, 4-3 BIG EAST) won in Omaha for the second straight season while scoring triple-digits for the third time. Despite the loss Creighton (18-2, 5-2 BIG EAST) has still matched its best record after 20 games in program history, last done in 2011-12.
The setback overshadowed three strong offensive showings for Creighton. Marcus Foster had a season-high 30 points, Isaiah Zierden had a season-high 15 points, and freshman Davion Mintz finished with season-highs of 17 points and eight assists after entering the contest with 22 career points and 10 career assists.
Katin Reinhardt led Marquette with 21 points and seven assists in 34 minutes off the bench, while Jajuan Johnson and Luke Fischer each added 18 points. Fischer also contributed eight rebounds and tied his career-high with six blocked shots. The Golden Eagles made 36-of-60 field goals overall, including 12-of-24 three-pointers, and also drained 18-of-24 foul shots. MU won the rebound battle 35-31 and generated a 34-27 edge in bench points.
Zierden had 15 points and five rebounds in 25 turnover-free minutes while earning the starting nod in place of Watson, who watched the game from the Bluejay bench on crutches. Creighton shot just 32.4 percent in the first half before coming back to shoot 64.7 percent after intermission.
Marquette made its move late in the first half when Reinhardt went on a personal 10-0 run to expand a 38-37 lead into a 48-37 bulge over a 101 second span. Johnson added a basket to complete the 12-0 run before a Zierden triple cut the Marquette halftime lead to 50-40.
Creighton steadily cut into the lead and trailed 71-60 with 12:15 left before three hoops by Fischer and another by Reinhardt trey manufactured a 9-2 run that pushed MU's lead to 80-62 with 10 minutes remaining.
Creighton would get within 10 points (95-85) with 2:25 left on a Zierden trey, but Marquette made 7-of-8 foul shots down the stretch to hold off the Jays.
Creighton returns to the court on Wednesday at 6 pm Central when it visits Georgetown. The program's Pink Out jersey auction ends on Sunday night. Fans can participate in that at http://www.gocreighton.com/pinkout.
