Women's Basketball Heads East to Battle Providence on Saturday

Omaha, Neb. -- Heading out of town for a quick trip to Rhode Island, the Creighton women's basketball team will take on their travel partner Providence on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 11:00 am (CT).

Creighton holds a 7-1 edge over Providence, taking two of the three meetings last season. The Bluejays, however, dropped a 61-59 decision the last time Creighton went to Providence (Feb. 14, 2016). Creighton is 2-1 overall in Providence.

Pivotal Road Stretch Wraps Up First Half of BIG EAST Play
Over the next two weeks Creighton will conclude the first half of BIG EAST play with road games against Providence, St. John's and Seton Hall. Entering the battle with Providence at 5-1, the next three games could prove pivotal to the Bluejays' hopes to reach the NCAA Tournament.
Undefeated at home, the Bluejays will play five of the final nine BIG EAST games in the friendly confines of D.J. Sokol Arena.

Janning Delivers Statement Game To Deliver Win Over Villanova
Senior Marissa Janning's double-double in Creighton's 60-46 win over Villanova on Jan. 10Â delivered a statement that she plans to finish her career the way it began, with a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Afforded a fifth year due to a medical redshirt, Janning was clear from the end of last season that she wants another run in the NCAA Tournament. After reached the Dance during 2012-13, Creighton has settled for WNIT berths in each of the past three seasons.
Against the Wildcats, Janning scored 18 on 9-of-16 from the field, grabbed 10 rebounds and held Villanova's Adrianna Hahn to just six points.

- The Bluejays hold a 7-1 series advantage over the Friars, but Providence upset Creighton in the last meeting in Rhode Island. Providence claimed a 61-59 win over the Bluejays on Feb. 14 last season. The Bluejays exacted a bit of revenge by ending Providence's season with a 70-53 win over the Friars in the BIG EAST Tournament on March 5.
- Under new head coach Jim Crowley the Friars got off to a fast start this season, claiming their first seven contests. Providence finished the 2015-16 season with just five victories.
- Providence is one of just two squads in the BIG EAST to send out the same starting five in each game this season, the other being Xavier.
- Saturday will mark the first time the Bluejays or the Friars players will be back in classes since BIG EAST play began.
- Creighton enters Saturday's contest having won eight of its last nine, while Providence has dropped eight of its last 10 contests.
- Saturday's matchup presents several interesting statistical matchups. Both the Friars and the Bluejays are rate in the top five of the conference in shooting percentage as well as field goal defense. - Play Inside Out: As good as Providence is at guarding the three, the Bluejays can give their shooters an extra step if Rollerson can force the defense to collapse.
- Crash the Glass: Providence is giving up better than 12 offensive rebounds per game to their opponents, making second chance points critical. Â
- Ball Security: Sarah Beal has given the Bluejays problems with her ability to cause turnovers the lead to layups.
