No. 8 Men's Soccer Plays To 1-1 Draw Against Nebraska-Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. -- No. 8 Creighton and Nebraska-Omaha played to a 1-1 draw on Monday night at Morrison Stadium.Â
Monday's contest in front of an announced crowd of 4,766 (11th-largest attendance in program history) marked the first regular-season match between the two schools as Division I opponents.
The Bluejays are now 1-1-1 while the Mavericks are 2-1-1.
Nebraska-Omaha opened the scoring with a goal on the first shot of the match.
During the 13th minute, Fazlo Alihodzic fired a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box that hit off the left post and into the right side of the net.
Creighton nearly tied the match with a penalty kick opportunity during the 17th minute. Myles Englis drew a foul in the box to set up the second penalty kick opportunity of the season for Lucas Stauffer. Stauffer launched the shot towards the Nebraska-Omaha goal, but Joseph Ghitis stopped the attempt with a diving save.
While the scoreboard read 1-0 in favor of Mavericks, the Bluejays launched six shots in the opening 45 minutes compared to only two from the Mavericks.

Creighton tied the match early in the second half. During the 52nd minute, Noah Franke sent a through ball to Ricardo Perez at the top of the box where the senior captain dribbled past the Maverick goalkeeper and found the back of the net to knot the match at 1.
The Bluejays controlled the tempo of the second half and had nine shots, but did not find a second goal to take the lead.
With 12 minutes to play in regulation, Nebraska-Omaha had a chance to take the advantage as Elvir Ibisevic took a wide open shot from the middle of the box after a breakaway. The ball sailed over the net to keep the score at 1-1.
Creighton countered as Riggs Lennon fired a shot on goal during the final minute, but Ghitis recorded his third save of the second half to send the match to overtime.
Neither team had a real opportunity in the first extra period, forcing the match to a second overtime.
The Bluejays controlled possession and held a 4-0 advantage in shots during the second OT and forced Ghitis to make one save a little over six minutes into the final extra period, but Creighton could not clinch a victory.
Through 110 minutes the Bluejays held a 21-9 advantage in shots and 12-6 in corner kicks.
Monday's match also featured a combined total of 31 fouls and seven yellow cards.
Freshman Julius Fohr made his first career start as a Bluejay, becoming the second true freshman to start a match this season for coach Elmar Bolowich. Joel Rydstrand and Peter Prescott were the only true freshmen to start a match for Creighton during 2015.
The Bluejays return to the pitch on Friday night for a contest against Pennsylvania. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. during Socctoberfest at Morrison Stadium.
