
Fabian Herbers Honored with BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Excellence Award

NEW YORK -- Former Creighton men's soccer player Fabian Herbers was honored with a 2015-16 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award. The conference announced the award winners on Monday.
Scholar-Athlete Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport for his or her efforts in the classroom, during athletic competition and in the community. Student-athletes with junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Representative Council.
In the classroom, Herbers accumlated a cumulative GPA of 3.567 while studying international business. He was named the 2015 Creighton BIG EAST Male Institutional Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team honors. The Germany native also made the BIG EAST All-Academic Team twice during his time at Creighton.
Herbers ended his decorated career at Creighton as the 2015 MAC Hermann Trophy National Player of the Year runner-up after leading the nation in assists (17) and points (47). He was also named a NSCAA First Team All-American for the second consecutive season. In addition to his national accolades, Herbers repeated as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and made the All-BIG EAST First Team for the second straight year.
The Omaha Sports Hall of Fame also honored him as the 2015-16 Omaha Sports Man of the Year.
Herbers was drafted sixth overall by the Philadelphia Union during the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. He has appeared in 17 matches, including three starts, while tallying one goal and two assists.
Herbers joined 21 other honorees, which included 16 seniors, three juniors and three graduate students. Additionally, 15 were honored as BIG EAST Players of the Year or Individual BIG EAST Championship winners at some point during their career.
