Hughes spent five seasons as an assistant coach primarily working with Bluejay goalkeepers
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton men's soccer assistant coach Justin Hughes has accepted a position as an Investment Advisor with Renaissance Financial in Omaha and will begin his new vocation in August.
Hughes spent five seasons as an assistant coach under Elmar Bolowich, primarily working with Bluejay goalkeepers, while helping lead the squad to consecutive College Cups (2011, 2012) and NCAA quarterfinals (2014, 2015).
"I'm grateful for what's he done with our program," Bolowich said. "He's been an integral part of the staff and to our success."
Last season, the Bluejays led Division I with 19 victories and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the second straight year.
In 2014, Hughes guided Creighton goalkeepers to the second-best goals against average in the nation (0.48) and the best winning percentage in the nation (.795) with a 16-3-3 record.
In 2011 and 2012, the Bluejays set the Missouri Valley Conference record for fewest goals allowed during the conference season (one). He also helped Creighton reach the College Cup in consecutive years for the first time in program history.
Off the pitch, Hughes earned two master's degrees from Creighton University. He received his Master of Business Administration and Master of Investment Managment and Financial Analysis.
Prior to his time in Omaha, Hughes served as an assistant coach for the men's and women's soccer programs at Elon University (2010) and played professional for two seasons with the Colorado Rapids and one season with Real Maryland FC in the United Soccer League.
In addition to spending time on the sidelines as a coach with Bolowich, Hughes also played four seasons for Bolowich at the University of North Carolina. He started all 43 matches he appeared in and ranked second in program history with a 0.79 career goals against average.
"I'm very grateful for coach Elmar, playing for him for four years and coaching with him for five," Hughes said.
Hughes also noted that although he will no longer be a part of the men's soccer coaching staff, he will continue to support the program.
"I wish him the very best," Bolowich said. "It's comforting to know that he'll be around in the Omaha community."
Bolowich said that a search will be conducted to find a replacement for Hughes.
