Creighton vs. Nebraska-Omaha Series (Bluejays lead, 49-30)
The Bluejays and Mavericks renewed an old rivalry in 2012, playing at least once each season since.
Creighton holds a slim 4-3 edge under head coach Ed Servais, taking the sole meeting between the two teams last season at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha by an 8-2 score on April 21.
Scouting the Mavericks (2016: 26-24, 16-11 Summit)
The Mavericks enter Tuesday's contest with a team batting average of .289, led by Cole Gruber at .368. Just a shade back in
average is Nebraska-Omaha's biggest
offensive threat, Clayton Taylor, who leads the Mavericks in home runs (10) and RBI (64).
Nebraska-Omaha has yet to name a starter, but as a team the Mavericks have a 5.00 ERA.
UNO took a three-game series from Western Illinois this weekend, claiming the final two contests. The Mavericks have won eight of their last 12 games, but are just 10-14 on the road this season.
Creighton vs. Nebraska Series (Huskers lead, 88-43-2)
Less than an hour apart, Creighton and Nebraska are familiar foes on the baseball field. Nebraska holds an 88-43-2 series edge on Creighton.
When playing in Omaha, the Huskers hold a 50-16-1 edge over the Bluejays. While in Lincoln Nebraska's edge is 38-27-1. Â
Coach Servais is 13-25 versus Nebraska in his career. Â
Creighton defeated the Huskers 4-3 in walk-off fashion on April 12 at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha. Brett Murray delivered a single to right field to plate Reagan Fowler for the winning run.
The Bluejays' win on April 12 was their first victory in the series since April 26, 2013 in Omaha. The last Creighton win in Lincoln came on April 6, 2010.
Scouting the Huskers (2016: 33-18, 13-8 Big Ten)
Nebraska comes into Tuesday's contest with seven victories in its last nine games. The Huskers recent hot streak has put Nebraska in prime position to earn an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament if they do not claim the Big Ten Tournament at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha later this season.
Nebraska is hitting .286 as a team, led by Ben Miller's .341 average.
The Huskers will start LHP Max Knutson in the night game. Knutson started the first meeting with the Bluejays in Lincoln in March 29. In that contest he threw 2.1 innings, earning a no-decision. As a team Nebraska has a 4.08 ERA.
Cox Kids Day at the Ballpark
Tuesday's 12:30 start is "Cox Kids Day" with an expected 40 schools from the Omaha area bringing an expected 8,000 elementary and middle school kids to the game.
One of the many activites planned
specifically for the game will be the display of Bluejay head shots drawn by three 5th grade classes from Hickory Hill Elementary School on the video board.
Day/Night Double Dip is a Rarity
Tuesday's double dip with Nebraska-Omaha (12:30) and Nebraska (6:30 pm) will present a rare experience for Bluejay fans.
The last time Creighton played two games against different teams came on June 3, 2012 in the NCAA Tournament. Creighton posted a 7-2 win over New Mexico to earn the right to face UCLA in the nightcap. The Bruins, however, eliminated Creighton with a 13-5 final.
The last time the Bluejays played two games against differing opponents in the regular season was on March 19, 2011. Creighton won both of those contests posting a 1-0 win over Valparaiso, then besting SIU Edwardsville 4-3 in 10 innings.
It Almost Happened in 2014
Creighton and Nebraska were set to play as part of day/night doubleheader on May 13, 2014. The Bluejays faced Stephan F. Austin in a game played at 12:30 pm (Cox Kids Day), but the Huskers were unable to get back to Omaha due to travel issues as the team returned from Michcigan State.
Call it the Nebraska Challenge
Another fun tidbit about playing the Mavericks and Huskers on the same day is the three D1 baseball teams will be playing at the same ballpark on the same day for the first time.
Nebraska is 2-0 against Nebraska-Omaha this season and 1-1 versus the Bluejays.
