Jays sweep Providence for first league tournament win since 2009
CAYCE, S.C. -- The Creighton women's tennis team picked up the program's first BIG EAST Championships win in history on Thursday with a 4-0 win over Providence at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C.
Eighth-seeded Creighton (9-9) advances to the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championships, where it meets top-seeded DePaul on Friday at 8 a.m. Central. Ninth-seeded Providence fell to 7-10 with the loss.
The Bluejay win avenged 4-2 losses to the Friars in both the 2014 and 2015 BIG EAST Championships, and was the school's first at a league championship since a victory over Bradley in 2009 at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships.
CU was paced by the play of junior Katherine Nelsen, who participated in a pair of victories.
Nelsen and Michaela Henne teamed at No. 3 doubles to post a 6-1 win over Nicole Cyterski and Risa Takanaka. Not much longer after that, Ashley Ishimura and Darby Rosette finished off a 6-2 win over Alana Prinos and Brooke Burnside at No. 1 doubles, as CU earned the doubles point.
Sam Anderson took down Brooke Burnside in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) at No. 5 singles as CU's lead in the match grew to 2-0.
Nelsen then topped Amanda Pitocco by identical 6-3 set scores at No. 3 singles to bring the Bluejays to the precipice of victory.
Freshman Claire Embree then closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles over Hannah Zangari.
With a win on Friday, Creighton will advance to the semifinals and play at 8 a.m. CST on Saturday. A loss on Friday would send CU into the consolation bracket and a 11:30 a.m. CST match on Saturday.
