Jays held to two hits in loss
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton Softball team had its six-game win streak halted on Saturday as Villanova blanked the Bluejays, 4-0, in game one of a doubleheader.
The win was Villanova's 13th in a row and improved the Wildcats to 22-13 (7-3 BIG EAST), while Creighton fell to 24-13 (6-2 BIG EAST).
Villanova struck first in the top of the first inning when Nikki Alden hit her fourth home run of the season over the right field fence. The blast, with Brittany Husk aboard, gave the Wildcats an early 2-0 lead and was the first run allowed this week by Bluejay pitching after shutout victories over Drake and Iowa State on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
Alden struck again to lead off the fourth inning, this time hitting a home run out to left field to help the Wildcats to a 3-0 lead.
VU added a sacrifice fly in the fifth frame to account for the game's final run.
Villanova ace Kate Poppe threw her league-leading fifth shutout of the season to improve to 15-9. She struck out 12 and allowed just a pair of hits. She worked into trouble in the seventh inning with a hit batsmen, a walk and a couple wild pitches, but struck out Kelsey Allender to end the game with the bases loaded.
CU starting pitcher Micaela Whitney (7-5) had her seven-game win streak snapped, allowing seven hits while striking out six in the loss.
CU's lone hits in the game came from Allender and Aujanae McCoy, but the Bluejays went 0-for-10 with runners on base and stranded eight overall. Michelle Trulin walked a career-high three times for CU.
Game two of the series between Creighton and Villanova is scheduled to start at approximately 2:30 pm, with live stats available at http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=118130&a=1 and free live video available at http://www.gocreighton.com/watch.
