Former top-50 recruit started 30 games as a true freshman for the Orange
OMAHA, Neb. -- Head coach Greg McDermott on Monday announced the addition of Kaleb Joseph to the Creighton men's basketball program.
Joseph, a guard who spent the previous two seasons at Syracuse, will have to sit out the 2016-17 season and then have two years of eligibility remaining.
"We are very excited to add someone with Kaleb's character and athletic ability to the Creighton family," said McDermott. "He is a multi-dimensional guard who possesses exceptional playmaking ability. He will fit in well within the Creighton University community and the city of Omaha. We are excited to welcome he and his family into the Bluejay family."
A 6-foot-3 guard from Nashua, N.H., Joseph was regarded as a top-50 recruit by both ESPN.com and Rivals.com after leading Cushing Academy (Mass.) to a pair of New England Preparatory School Athletic Council Class AA championships.
He arrived at Syracuse and made an immediate impact for Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim, starting 30-of-31 games as a freshman. He led the team with 3.8 assists per game and added 5.9 points and 0.9 steals per contest. Joseph notched his first career double-double (10 points, 10 assists) against Villanova, and he was one of 22 candidates on the 2015 Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year Award watch list.
Joseph's playing time diminished as a sophomore, as he averaged 0.8 points and 0.6 assists per game in limited action on the Orange's Final Four squad.
Under the guidance of McDermott, Creighton went 20-15 last season and reached the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament.
