Kissimmee, Fla. -- In the Bluejays third day of action at the Rebel Springs Games Creighton split two early games. The Bluejays fell to South Dakota State 1-0 in the opener, but went on to defeat Hampton 7-3 on Tuesday, March 8.
Following Tuesday's games Creighton is 11-9 on the season and will play two more contests in Florida on Wednesday.
GAME 1: South Dakota State 1, Creighton 0
Tuesday's opening contest was one of missed opportunities for the Bluejays. Creighton loaded the bases in the second, fifth and sixth frame but were unable to push across the lead run.
Sydnee Eck, meanwhile, took a perfect game into the sixth before surrendering a bunt single to open the frame. Eck sat down the next three Jackrabbits to head to the seventh.
After Creighton stranded two runners in its half of the seventh, South Dakota State used the momentum. The Jackrabbits got a leadoff walk, followed by a bunt single to put runners on first and secon. One out later Abbey Murphy delivered the walk-off single.
Eck dropped to 7-4 on the season, allowing one run on three hits and one walk. SDSU's Bryana Clark moved to 3-6, holding the Bluejays to four hits and four walks.
GAME 2: Creighton 7, Hampton 3
Playing right away against Hampton, the Bluejays took out some frustration by scoring one in the first, another in the second and five runs in the fourth frame.
Kelsey Allender got the Bluejays rolling in the bottom of the first with a leadoff walk. She went to second on a sacrifice by Michelle Trulin, took third on a passed ball and scored via an RBI single from Allie Reinhart.
Creighton's second-inning tally was of the unearned variety as Angela Lewis scored when Allender reached on a fielding error.
In the fifth the Bluejays got a one-out walk from Tash Coffiel as the next five Creighton hitters reached. Blake Ringle capped the inning with a three-run bomb to push the Bluejay lead to 7-1.
Hampton got two runs back in the top of the fifth, but Bluejay reliever Michal Hylton held the line right there.
Hylton picked up the win (3-1), allowing two runs on four hits in 5.2 innings of work. Hampton's Allie Hotetz fell to 0-2 on the season, surrendering seven runs, six earned, on six hits and eight walks.
"The first game was just one of those contests where we couldn't get the big hit, but it was very nice to bounce back in the second game," said head coach Brent Vigness.
The Bluejays begin play on Wednesday, March 9 against Holy Cross at 12:30 pm, then will face Hampton again at 2:45 pm.
