Bluejays held to one hit in shutout loss
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton Softball team had its three-game win streak snapped by South Dakota State on Wednesday, dropping the second game of a doubleheader by a 10-0 score. The game was shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Bryana Clark (6-7) shined in the circle for South Dakota State (12-21) in the nightcap, throwing a complete game one-hitter for her second shutout of the season. Ali Herdliska took care of the offense for SDSU, going 3-for-3 with two homers and five RBI to pace the Jackrabbit attack.
Creighton's lone hit came in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Allie Reinhart lined a clean single to center.
South Dakota State put up crooked numbers in the second, third and fifth innings.
Herdliska homered to lead off the second inning, and the Jackrabbits added two more runs to make it 3-0.
In the third inning, Herdliska homered again, her 10th blast of the season, to make it 6-0 and end the day for CU starter Kelly Mardones (0-1). CU turned to Jen Daro to throw the final three innings in the junior's first pitching appearance of the season.
SDSU finished the day with four runs in the top of the fifth inning, with a Herdliska RBI double accounting for the first run. The Jackrabbits made it 8-0 on a sac fly, and Lyndsey Crist hit her second homer of the second to close the day's scoring.
In an otherwise rough game, one bright spot was the Bluejay defense, which did not commit an error and turned a pair of line drives into double plays. It marked just the seventh time in the last eight years CU has turned multiple double plays in the same contest.
Creighton (18-11, 2-0 BIG EAST) returns to action on Saturday at 11 pm Central with a doubleheader at Seton Hall (18-16, 1-2 BIG EAST).
