May 6th, 2016 marks the 11th Annual Leaders for Life luncheon held at D.J. Sokol Arena inside the Wayne and Eileen Ryan Athletic Center at Creighton University. The Leaders for Life Luncheon is the annual fundraising event that celebrates Creighton's female student-athletes. All funds raised during the event directly support the Leaders for Life Endowed Scholarship Fund and program enhancements for all eight Bluejay women's athletic teams.
The Leaders for Life luncheon not only allows female student-athletes the opportunity to thank supporters of women's athletics, but also provides Creighton an occasion to honor two influential supporters of women's athletics for their continued leadership and advancement at Creighton and in the community.
Kirsten Bernthal Booth has been named the recipient for this year's Leader for Life Award. Booth is in her 13th year as the current Head Volleyball Coach. She has built a winning program at Creighton, both on the court and off, elevating the Bluejays to national prominence, taking the program from a 12-18 record in her first season in 2003, to a consistent 20-win performer and a perennial conference and national contender. In 2015, Booth led her program to its first-ever appearance in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament after winning both the BIG EAST regular season and tournament championships in 2014 and 2015. During her tenure, Booth's Creighton teams have also earned nine American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Awards and boasted two CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. Booth is not only a coach, but a role model for all her players, coaches and all who know her.
Melissa Kean, Ph. D., has been named the recipient for this year's Believe and Achieve Award. Kean is a Creighton University alumna and the Centennial Historian of Rice University. Kean earned a master's degree in history from Creighton in 1993. She also holds masters and doctoral degrees from Rice and a law degree from the University of Iowa. She has held the position of Centennial Historian at Rice since 2005, publishing several articles and a book on elements of Rice's history. An integral member of the Creighton Board of Trustees from 2011 to 2015, Kean served on the Board's Athletics Committee, was a significant contributor to the Schlegel Center for Service and Justice and was also instrumental in a number of capital projects and scholarship initiatives, including the Leaders for Life Athletic Scholarship. Kean has served on numerous advisory boards at multiple universities and recently served as President of Creighton's National Alumni Board in 2009. Her leadership during her career and contributions to higher education and women's athletics inspire many women.
