Omaha, Neb. -- Led by a three-hit, two RBI evening from senior Ryan Fitzgerald, the Creighton Baseball team defeated Kansas State 5-4 on Tuesday, March 22.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 13-4 on the season, while the Wildcats fell to 11-10.
After a flawless top of the first from starter Connor Miller, the Bluejay offense loaded got a one out double down the right field line by Fitzgerald and an RBI single through the right side by junior Nicky Lopez to take a 1-0 edge.
Kansas State rallied for two runs in the top of the third to claim a short-lived 2-1. Creighton quickly answered in the bottom half as junior Daniel Woodrow opened the frame by pulling a double just inside the right field line. This time it was Fitzgerald supplying the RBI single to right to knot the game at 2-2.
Creighton reclaimed the lead in the following frame with three runs on four singles and a hit batter. Harrison Crawford was hit by a pitch to open the frame, then consecutive infield singles from Kevin Connolly and Matt Gandy loaded the bags. One out later Woodrow gave Creighton with an RBI groundout as the speedster beat a relay throw to first. Fitzgerald and Lopez followed with RBI singles to push the Bluejays' lead to 5-2.
While the offense did its job sophomore reliever Ethan DeCaster picked up his first win (1-0) of the season with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Gerber retired the final two batters of the game to earn his fifth save of the season.
Kansas State starter, Logan Wiley, took the loss (1-1) allowing four runs on six hits in three innings.
Connolly and Lopez joined Fitzgerald with multi-hit performances as both collected two hits.
