Rowing Opens Spring Season against SMU & Texas

Dallas, Texas -- Competing in a three-team event on White Rock Lake Saturday morning, the Creighton women's rowing team faced off against Texas and host, SMU.
The Bluejays opened the event with a win over SMU in 2nd Varsity 8 action, clocking in at a time of 7:18.3. SMU, meanwhile, closed the race at 7:30.94.
SMU, however, earned the win in 1st Varsity 8+, 1st Varsity 4 and 2nd Varsity 4 action as the Bluejays battled the Mustangs head-to-head in those races.
In 1st Varsity 8+ action, the Mustang crew finished in 7:24.4, outpacing Creighton, which clocked in at 7:35.4.
In 2nd Varsity 4 action, SMU crossed the finish line in 8:32.1 for the victory, with the Bluejays trailing at 8:42.1.
The Mustangs finished over 16 seconds ahead of Creighton in 1st Varsity 4 action, with SMU finishing in 7:50.5 for first place.
Texas swept the Bluejays in 3rd Varsity 8 and 4th Varsity 8 competition with the Longhorns posting times of 7:11.5 and 7:22.4 respectively. Creighton finished those races in 8:15.7 and 8:40.8.
"Todays conditions were very challenging," said Bluejay head coach Dan Chipps. "In the first race we had a 4 MPH tailwind, that changed to a 6 MPH headwind in race two."
"Overall I am pleased with our performance today," added Chipps. "We had a great week of training and are excited to return to Omaha, then face Tulsa in two weeks."
