Women's Basketball Falls to No. 21 DePaul, 78-52

Omaha, Neb. - The Creighton women's basketball team suffered a 78-52 loss to No. 21 DePaul on Sunday, Feb. 21.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 13-15 on the season and 7-9 in BIG EAST play, while DePaul moved to 23-7 overall and 15-2 in league play.
After falling behind 5-0 in the opening moments, the Bluejays battled back with six straight to take a 6-5 edge. Freshman Audrey Faber started the run with a pull-up jumper from six feet, then junior MC McGrory followed Faber's lead with back-to-back jumpers in the paint. DePaul answered on a running layup by Chanise Jenkins starting a stretch of trading baskets. For the Bluejays junior Bailey Norby pushed Creighton back on top 8-7. After a Blue Demon bucket, McGrory delivered another mid-range jumper to make it 10-9. DePaul seized the lead for good with a three-ball from Ashton Millender to ignite a 14-4 Blue Demon run to close the opening period of play.
The DePaul run continued into the first four minutes of the second quarter as the Blue Demons extended their lead to 31-16 (6:22) to force Creighton head coach Jim Flanery to use a timeout. The Bluejays heeded their coach's words, scoring the next six points on a layup from Faber, a three-pointer and one of two from the line by sophomore Jade Owens. By halftime, however, DePaul extended its lead back to double digits at 43-29.
DePaul salted the game away in the third quarter as the Blue Demons out scored Creighton 23-4. The deficit grew to as much as 39 (74-35), but Creighton closed the game on a 17-4 run.
McGrory finished with a team-high 11 in the loss, while Jessica January led DePaul with 16 points.
Following the contest, Creighton's lone senior Tessa Leytem was honored for her commitment to the Bluejays over the past four seasons.
The Bluejays return to action on Friday, Feb. 26 as Creighton will face Seton Hall at 6:05 pm (CT). The game will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
