Win Streak Snapped As Men's Basketball Falls at Butler

Balanced Butler attack too much for CU to overcome
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- A career-night from Butler's Austin Etherington helped lead the host Bulldogs to an 88-75 win over visiting Creighton before 7,330 fans at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Tuesday night in Indianapolis. Etherington scored 17 points, including four three-pointers, in the victory, well above his season average of 2.4 points per game.
Creighton had its three-game win streak snapped and drops to 17-10 overall and 8-6 in the BIG EAST. Butler won the fourth time in five tries and upped its record to 18-8, including a 7-7 BIG EAST mark. The teams have split a pair of regular-season meetings this winter.
Creighton spent most of the first half playing from behind, as a hot start by Kelan Martin propelled to the Bulldogs to the 36-29 halftime lead. Martin made his first four three-point tries and had 15 points at the break. Creighton was paced by Maurice Watson Jr.'s nine points and six rebounds from Toby Hegner in the first 20 minutes.
After Creighton got within four at 38-34, Butler would drain three-pointers on three straight trips to build a 47-37 lead for its first double-figure lead of the night. Two of the trifectas came from Austin Etherington, helping the fifth-year senior to a career-high point total on the evening.
Creighton would close the gap within 49-46 on a James Milliken bucket with 14:03 to play before Butler answered with a turnaround shot by Andrew Chrabascz and a trey from Kellen Dunham. Etherington drained a long trey with 11:11 to go to return BU's lead to 58-49. A resounding dunk from Etherington brought the house down and gave BU a 65-58 lead just under the eight minute mark.
The Bulldog lead grew as large as 16 (84-70) in the waning minutes on a parade to the free throw line.
Butler had five men score in double-figures, led by 21 points from Martin, 17 by Etherington and 16 by Dunham. BU shot 43.1 percent for the game, including 13-of-27 from three-point range. BU was also 19-of-24 at the line on the night.
Creighton was paced by 22 points from Watson, while Milliken finished with 15. Also in double-figures were Isaiah Zierden (11) and Cole Huff (11), with Huff leading the way on the glass with eight rebounds. Creighton shot 23-of-55 overall (41.8 percent) and made 9-of-25 three-pointers to go with 20-of-26 free throw marksmanship.
Creighton will have this weekend off before returning to the court next Wednesday at 7:05 pm when it hosts Marquette.
