More than $130,000 raised in the last five years
OMAHA, Neb. -- On a night where 17,924 fans sold out CenturyLink Center Omaha to watch their beloved Creighton Bluejays host Seton Hall in a key BIG EAST battle, it was the scene before, during and after last Saturday's basketball game that many will long remember.
Thanks to CHI Health and Methodist Hospital, the program's annual Creighton vs. Cancer Pink Out was a rousing success off the court. The hospitals teamed up to sponsor the event, and the 16,000 pink t-shirts that were handed out at the door. Creighton's players wore specially-designed warm-ups and jerseys with pink trim that were customized to honor a friend or family member of a booster who has battled or is currently battled cancer. The team wore special pink shoes, and the coaches added gold laces to their pink shoes in honor of Lacey Holsworth, an 8-year-old Michigan State fan who lost her battle with cancer in April 2014.
During the game, a moving Stand Up For Cancer moment took place at the first media timeout of the second half. An emotional crowd rose as one, each person holding a sign in honor of someone who has been affected by cancer.
Following the game the Bluejay players returned to the court to meet with the the families of the boosters who had bid on their jersey. In addition to posing for photos and signing a few autographs, they listened as the families shared stories of loved ones who have been affected by cancer. The cause is close to the heart many within the program, including head coach Greg McDermott. McDermott's wife, Theresa, was diagnosed with breast cancer 11 years ago but has beaten the disease and continues to be an advocate in the fight against the deadly disease.
In all, $21,816.71 was raised from this year's event. That pushes the five-year total to more than $130,000 raised in the fight against cancer.
