Men's Soccer defeats No. 16-seed Kentucky, Advances to Third Round of NCAA Tournament

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 23 Creighton men's soccer team defeated No. 18 and 16th-seeded Kentucky 3-2 during the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the Wendell and Vickie Bell Soccer Complex on Sunday.
The Bluejays will host Providence on Saturday night at 6 p.m, in the third round of the NCAAs.
Creighton improved to 13-6-3 with the win, and Kentucky ended its season at 11-5-3.
Creighton got on the board early following a free kick from Joel Rydstrand during the ninth minute. Rydstrand sent a free kick into the box where Riggs Lennon headed the ball off a Kentucky defender before it fell into the back of the net.
During the 28th minute, Kentucky had a chance to tie the match with a penalty kick. Jordan Wilson lined up the ball and sent a low shot towards the box, but Alex Kapp came up with the save to keep the score at 1-0.
Ricardo Perez added to the lead with a goal from outside the 18-yard box. Perez dribbled the ball down the center of the pitch before firing a shot from just outside the top of the box that found the back of the net to give the Bluejays a 2-0 lead during the 32nd minute.
Creighton had only three shots during the opening half, but each shot was on goal.
Kentucky cut the deficit in half with a goal from Kevin Barajas during the 68th minute. Connor Probert sent in a free kick from the left side into the box where Barajas recovered a rebound and kicked the ball into the back of the net.
During the 77th minute, Kentucky picked up a red card for a hard foul along the sideline, forcing the Wildcats to play a man down for the final 13 minutes.
The Bluejays regained a two-goal lead on a run out opportunity less than a minute following the booking. Perez sent a long pass to Karim Sawaf before the freshman scored his first career goal to give Creighton a 3-1 lead during the 78th minute.
Sawaf became the 11th Bluejay to score a goal this season.
Kentucky refused to go down easy, as JJ Williams converted off of a corner kick during the 89th minute to cut the final deficit to one goal.
The Wildcats ended the contest with a 13-6 advantage in shots and 9-1 edge in corner kicks.
Kapp ended the match with four saves, including a game-sealing kick-save during the final minute.
The Bluejays scored three or more goals for the ninth time this season.
Creighton and Providence will now matchup for the third time this season. The Friars picked up a 1-0 victory in Omaha during the regular season on Oct. 29, while the Bluejays returned the favor with a victory at Providence, 2-1, during the BIG EAST semifinals (Nov. 10).
The Bluejays will host the Friars on Saturday. Kickoff at Morrison Stadium is scheduled 6 p.m.
