Men's Soccer Defeats Tulsa 3-0, Advances to NCAA Second Round

Creighton will play at 16-seed Kentucky on Sunday afternoon
OMAHA, Neb. -- The No. 24 Creighton men's soccer team used a pair of early goals to defeat Tulsa 3-0 in the first round the NCAA Tournament at Morrison Stadium on Thursday.
The Bluejays improved to 12-6-3 and will play in the NCAA Second Round at No. 16-seed Kentucky on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Hurricane end their season at 10-5-5.
Mitch LaGro opened the scoring on Creighton's first shot of the match during the third minute. Joel Rydstrand sent a corner kick into the box where LaGro aggressively ran towards the middle of the goalie area and headed the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
Myles Englis added to the Bluejays' early lead with a goal during the sixth minute. Ricky Lopez-Espin fed Luke Haakenson down the right side of the box before Haakenson sent the ball towards the far post where Englis knocked the ball past Tulsa's goalkeeper. The goal was Englis' fifth of the postseason during four matches.
After the early flurry, Tulsa played Creighton more evenly for the remainder of the opening half, but could not cut the deficit before the break.
Lopez-Espin added a goal during the 68th minute to give Creighton a 3-0 advantage. Haakenson recorded his second assist of the match on a give-and-go play with Lopez-Espin on the right-half of the box as the junior scored his 10th goal of the season.
The Bluejays ended the match with a 14-8 advantage in shots, while Tulsa had a 5-4 edge in corner after taking all five during the closing moments of Thursday's contest.
Jake McGuire made three saves for the Golden Hurricane.
Alex Kapp needed to make two saves and Michael Kluver made one as the Bluejays recorded their eighth shutout of the season.
With the victory, Creighton improved to 15-2-1 in NCAA Tournament matches at Morrison Stadium. The Bluejays also picked up their eighth victory (8-0-0) of the season when scoring three or more goals.
Creighton will play at 16th-seeded and No. 18 Kentucky (11-4-3) on Sunday. Kickoff from The Bell is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. central.
