Men's Soccer Falls 1-0 At Villanova For First BIG EAST Loss

Creighton held a 22-5 shot advantage, but was shutout for the third time this season
The Creighton men's soccer team tallied its first BIG EAST loss as Villanova defeated the Bluejays 1-0 at the Higgins Soccer Complex in Villanova, Pa. on Saturday afternoon.

No. 10 Creighton fell to 8-3-3 overall and 4-1-1 in the BIG EAST, while the Wildcats improved to 8-5-2 overall and 3-2-1 during league play.

Miguel Polley scored Villanova's lone goal during the 21st minute. Polley fired a free kick from outside the left side of the 18-yard box towards the front of the goal where a Creighton defender deflected the ball before it slipped past Alex Kapp.

In the 37th minute, the Bluejays had their best opportunity of the first half to tie the match. Myles Englis played a ball to Lucas Stauffer on the left side of the 18-yard box who crossed the ball to the far post. Luke Haakenson received the pass and headed the ball, but Villanova's Will Steiner came up with the save.

Englis fired a pair of shots during the final three minutes of the opened half, but neither found the back of the net.

Creighton held a 15-1 advantage in shots, but trailed 1-0 at the break.

Similar to the first half, the Bluejays controlled possession of the ball during the majority of the final 45 minutes.

Creighton fired 10 corners during the second half, but the Villanova defense stood tall and allowed only two shots on goal.

During the 70th minute, Villanova recorded its first shot of the second half, but Kapp recorded his first save of the afternoon.

The Bluejays countered during the 72nd minute, as Steiner needed to make a diving save on a shot from the right side of the 18-yard box off the foot of Englis.

Englis and Riggs Lennon each led Creighton with four shots.
The Bluejays ended the match with a 22-5 edge in shots and 14-2 in corner kicks.
Villanova's Steiner notched fives saves on Saturday for his fourth shutout of the season.Â
The last time Creighton had  20 or more shots in a single match without scoring a goal was on Oct. 19, 2013 against Villanova. The Wildcats picked up a 1-0 overtime win at Morrison Stadium in the first match between the schools, despite being outshot 20-13.Â
Saturday's shutout marked Creighton's third time it failed to score this season.

The Bluejays will remain away from Omaha and travel to Cincinnati for its next match. Creighton plays at Xavier on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m.
