Stanford's Morris earns National Player of the Year award following national title run
ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Creighton's Fabian Herbers capped a historic campaign with a runner-up finish for the MAC Hermann Trophy as announced at a banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo., on Friday night. The junior forward led the nation with 47 points (15G, 17A) this season en route to leading Creighton to the program's fourth national quarterfinal appearance in the last five years.
Stanford's Jordan Morris was the recipient of the award after helping the Cardinal to the program's first national title by scoring two goals in the championship match. Morris was tabbed as the Pac-12 Player of the Year and enjoyed stints with U.S. Soccer this season, splitting time between the USMNT senior team and U-23s.
Herbers and Georgetown's Brandon Allen were runners-up for the award.
The MAC Hermann Trophy, which is presented annually, is the highest individual intercollegiate award administered by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Herbers was the only player in NCAA Division I to rank among the nation's top 10 for goals (15) and assists (17). A two-time First Team All-American, he was unanimously selected as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, marking the second-consecutive season in which he earned the accolade.
He recorded a point in 20 of Creighton's 23 matches, helping the Bluejays to a nation-leading 19 wins. The 19 wins tied the 1993 squad for the third-most single-season wins in program history.
The Bluejays, which topped the NSCAA Top 25 poll for a program-best eight consecutive weeks (Sept. 8-Oct. 27), got off to a 15-0-0 start this season, marking the best start for a Creighton team since 1993 (19-0-0) and best start by any team since Akron began 23-0-0 in 2009.
With his two assists in Creighton's national quarterfinal match versus Akron, Herbers set a new program record for single-season assists (17), surpassing Richard Mulrooney's mark of 16 set in 1996 and 1998. His 17 assists led the nation, and he finished tied for third for total goals (15).
His 47 points were fourth-most in Creighton single-season history. In just three seasons at Creighton, Herbers' 85 career points rank fourth among active players in NCAA Division I.
