Highly-sought prospect led the nation in assists and points as a junior.
BALTIMORE, Md. — Following a historic junior campaign, MAC Hermann Trophy finalist and two-time NSCAA First Team All-American Fabian Herbers has declared his eligibility for the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. The 2016 MLS SuperDraft will be held on Thursday, Jan. 14 in Baltimore, Md., and be video streamed on MLSSoccer.com.
The only player in NCAA Division I to rank among the nation's top 10 for goals (15) and assists (17), Herbers was unanimously selected as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, marking the second-consecutive season in which he earned the accolade.
Herbers recorded a point in 20 of Creighton's 23 matches and finished as the nation's leading point scorer (47), helping the Bluejays to a nation-leading 19 wins. The 19 wins tied the 1993 squad for the third-most single-season wins in program history and helped CU to the program's fourth national quarterfinal appearance in the last five years.
"I am excited for Fabian [Herbers] and the opportunity for him to continue his career in the MLS," Creighton head coach Elmar Bolowich said. "He had a stellar junior year for the Bluejays. We are very proud of his accomplishments and wish him well in his professional pursuit."
Herbers' 47 points were fourth-most in Creighton single-season history. In just three seasons at Creighton, Herbers' 85 career points rank fourth among active players in NCAA Division I.
With his two assists in Creighton's national quarterfinal match versus Akron, Herbers set a new program record for single-season assists (17), surpassing Richard Mulrooney's mark of 16 set in 1996 and 1998. His 17 assists led the nation, and he finished tied for third for total goals (15).
Currently, five Creighton alumni are active in Major League Soccer: Mehdi Ballouchy, Ethan Finlay, Eric Miller, Chris Schuler and Seth Sinovic, though Herbers and Bluejay teammates Timo Pitter, Vincent Keller, Eric DeJulio and Connor Sparrow all are candidates to be selected in the upcoming draft.
