Not the Size of the Bird in the Fight, Or the Dog for that Matter
The smallest player on both the Creighton and the Georgetown rosters are point guards Jade Owens and Dionna White. Despite their size the duo lead their respective team in rebounding in BIG EAST play as Owens is averageing 5.6 per game, while White grabs 6.0 rpg in conference play.
Creighton Shows the Beginning Isn't Nearly as Important as the Finish
In Creighton's 53-48 win over Villanova on Jan. 29, the Bluejays opened the game 1-of-15 from the field (6.7%). Creighton went on to close the first half 6-of-10 (60%) and hit 17-of-35 (48.6%) over the remainder of the game to secure the victory.
Great Way to Start the Second Half
The last time Creighton and Villanova faced off it sparked a four-game win streak for each team. Friday's battle with Villanova marked the beginning of the second half of BIG EAST play.
Having claimed a regular-season sweep of the Wildcats, the Bluejays would enjoy little more than another elongated winning streak. The next chance for Creighton also brings a chance for revenge as the Bluejays face Georgetown on Sunday, Jan. 31.
Defense in 4D
Under head coach Jim Flanery the Bluejays have become known for three-point shooting, while that is still a hallmark of this team, the key to Creighton's four-game home win streak has been defense.
Against Xavier, Butler, Providence and Villanvoa, the Bluejays have taken their defense to a new level, holding each of the BIG EAST rivals under 50 points. Â
The last time the Bluejays held three straight home opponents under 50 was the Bluejays magical MVC Tournament run in 2011-12.
The last time the Bluejays had a home stretch rivaling this strong of defensive effort was 2008-09 when Creighton held Wichita State (45), Northern Iowa (44) and Bradley (46) under 50.
Creighton's best stretch of home defense came from the start of the 1976-77 season through the final game of the 1977-78 year. The Bluejays did not allow a team to reach 50 points for 13 consecutive contests (Nov. 26, 1976 to Feb. 14, 1978).
