Jays fall 74-73 in the nation's capital
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Creighton had five men score in double-figures but it wasn't enough as Creighton dropped a 74-73 decision to Georgetown on Tuesday night at Verizon Center. The Hoyas ended the game on a 15-3 run in the final 2:16.
Creighton fell to 14-7 on the year and is 5-3 in the BIG EAST, while Georgetown moved to 13-8 and is 6-2 in league play.
Creighton broke free from a close first half that featured 11 lead changes with a 10-0 burst that gave the Bluejays a 31-24 lead. Georgetown answered with the final eight points of the frame to take the one-point lead into the locker room. Maurice Watson Jr. had six points, seven rebounds and five assists in the opening 20 minutes, while Zach Hanson and Isaiah Zierden each scored eight points. Georgetown was paced by seven points from D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, while Isaac Copeland added five points, four assists and six rebounds.
After surrendering a four-point play on Georgetown's first trip, Creighton would embark on a 9-0 run to build a 42-36 lead with 16:17 left.
Creighton maintained that lead through most of a proliferation of whistles in the second half. Cole Huff broke free from a 1-for-8 start with big plays down the stretch. He made 4-of-4 free throws and sank a corner three-pointer to give CU a 62-53 lead with 5:30 to play. Watson would hit a long-range jumper on CU's next trip to stretch the lead to double-figures for the first time with five minutes remaining.
Georgetown cut CU's lead to eight on a Marcus Derrickson triple with 2:16 to go, and the Hoyas got within three at 71-68 with 1:00 left. The Jays would then turn it over and Kaleb Johnson went in for an uncontested dunk with 50.8 left. James Milliken would be fouled with 44.9 left, who made both. Georgetown answered with a tip-in by Reggie Cameron with 30.6 left to return the lead to one. Khyri Thomas was fouled with 23.3 left, only to miss both. Smith-Rivera was fouled with 6.2 left and sank both to cap the frantic Hoyas rally.
Watson led CU with 16 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, while Huff (14), Hanson (12), Groselle (11) and Zierden (10) all scored double-figures. Hanson made all six field goal attempts but spent most of the night in foul trouble along with Groselle. The Jays shot 40.6 percent from the field, but were just 4-of-21 from long-range. The Bluejays were also 17-of-24 at the line, had 11 assists compared to 10 turnovers, and outrebounded the Hoyas 42-36.
Georgetown was led by 19 points from Smith-Rivera, while L.J. Peak had 11 and Derrickson 10 points. GU shot 41.7 percent and were 6-of-21 from deep while sinking 18-of-22 free throw tries.
