Herbers goes 6th to Philadelphia Union; Pitter chosen 33rd by FC Dallas
BALTIMORE, Md. — NSCAA First Team All-Americans Fabian Herbers and Timo Pitter each took the next step in their respective soccer careers on Thursday, as the two members of Creighton's dynamic duo—which accounted for nearly 50 percent of the Bluejays' offensive output this season—were selected in the MLS SuperDraft in Baltimore, Md.
Herbers, who was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year each of the past two seasons, was selected sixth overall by the Philadelphia Union with a pick acquired via a trade with the Houston Dyanomo last month.
The Ahaus, Germany, native led the nation with 47 points, scoring 15 goals and dishing out a program-record 17 assists. He was the only player in NCAA Division I Men's Soccer to rank among the national top ten for both goals and assists.
Armed with three of the top six picks of the SuperDraft, Philadelphia used all three selections on players from BIG EAST member institutions. The Union chose Georgetown defenders Joshua Yaro (BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year) and Keegan Rosenberry second and third, respectively, before selecting Herbers at No. 6.
Herbers was one of three male finalists for the annual MAC Hermann Trophy, which is the highest individual intercollegiate award administered by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
He excelled off the field, as well, earning CoSIDA Academic All-America honors for a second-consecutive season.
After acquiring the 13th pick of the second round (33rd overall) from Colorado via a draft-day trade, FC Dallas selected Pitter. The Oberschwarzach, Germany, native posted 10 goals and five assists in 2015 en route to being named BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year for a second-consecutive season.
Pitter finished his career ranking third among active players in NCAA D-I for total points (88) and among Creighton's all-time top ten for career points and goals (33). In his four seasons, Pitter impressively started all of Creighton's 89 matches.
He was one of 30 men's soccer student-athletes to be selected as a candidate for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award®, and was a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy.
Herbers and Pitter accounted for 72 of Creighton's 153 points and helped the Bluejays to a nation-leading 19 wins, which tied the 1993 squad for the third-most single-season wins in program history.
The Bluejays were ranked atop the NSCAA Top 25 poll for a program-best eight consecutive weeks (Sept. 8-Oct. 27) and later clinched the program's fourth national quarterfinal appearance in five years with an NCAA Third Round victory at North Carolina on Nov. 28.
