Bluejays never trail while winning 10th straight game against UNO
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's basketball team became the first visiting team to pick up a win at Baxter Arena with a 69-46 triumph over crosstown rival Omaha on Sunday night. The Bluejays scored the game's first seven points, led 15-3 after one quarter, and never trailed.
Creighton's 10th straight victory in the series improved the Bluejays to 5-6 on the season, snapping a rare four-game losing streak. UNO dropped to 7-4 this winter, falling for the first time in six games at Baxter Arena.
Bailey Norby opened her career night with a rebound on Creighton's first defensive possession and a basket on its first offensive trip, and her team never looked back. The Bluejays held the Mavericks to just one point in its first 10 possessions, rolling to a 15-3 lead. Norby opened the second quarter with her third basket of the evening and also keyed a defensive effort that saw Omaha miss 17 of its first 18 shots from the field.
A 7-2 run midway through the second quarter by UNO drew the Mavericks within 22-13, but Audrey Faber would drain consecutive three-pointers, then feed Norby inside to return the lead to double-figures. The margin stretched to as large as 17 (30-13) before the Bluejays settled for a 32-16 lead at the intermission. Norby led CU with a career-high 10 points to complement five rebounds at the break and UNO shot a paltry 6-for-29 (20.7 percent) in the opening 20 minutes.
Creighton opened the third quarter with scores on its first four trips, pushing the lead over 20 for the first time on a floater from Jade Owens in the paint, and were never threatened.
Creighton was paced by 21 points from Faber, who also dished five assists. Also scoring in double-figures were MC McGrory (11) and Norby (10). Norby tied her career-best with six rebounds. The Bluejays drained 10-of-26 three-point attempts and shot 40.9 percent overall from the field. The Bluejays won the rebound battle 42-38, had 19 assists versus eight turnovers, and also blocked six shots.
UNO was led by a career-high 16 points from Caroline Hogue, who also added three blocked shots, while Mikaela Shaw contributed 16 points and seven rebounds. The Mavericks shot 28.8 percent overall (17-59), and 21.1 percent (4-19) from deep. The Mavericks are coached by one-time Bluejay Brittany Lange, who played for Creighton coach Jim Flanery in 2005-06.
The Bluejays return to action on Tuesday at 6:05 pm when it hosts Northern Iowa. The Panthers are coached by Creighton Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Tanya Warren. The game can be heard on 1290 AM, KOIL.
