TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Creighton Baseball team suffered its first series sweep of the season as the Jays fell to Indiana State, 5-3, on Sunday, April 14
Trailing 1-0 entering the top of the fifth, the Jays took their first lead of the weekend series with three runs on four hits.
Freshman Ryan Fitzgerald got the Jays going with a single to lead off the fifth. He moved into scoring position on a sacrifice by sophomore Kevin Lamb. Junior Brad McKewon followed with a double off the left-center field wall to tie the game at 1-1. McKewon went to third on a line drive single from junior Federico Castagnini. Creighton claimed the lead on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Jake Peter and junior Mike Gerber capped the inning with an RBI triple down the right field line to give the Bluejays a 3-1 edge.
The Sycamores got the three runs back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a throwing error and a two-run homer by Indiana State's Mike Fitzgerald to make it 4-3.
Indiana State added an insurance run in the seventh to push the final score to 5-3.
Junior Bryan Sova suffered the loss (1-2) for the Jays, surrendering two runs on two hits in 0.2 innings.
Indiana State's bullpen held the Jays scoreless over the final four frames as Josh Negele earned the win (2-0), holding Creighton scoreless in one inning of relief. The Sycamore's A.J. McElderry came on in the ninth inning to record the final out for his first save of the season.
Gerber led the Jays at the plate with three hits in four at-bats.
Creighton returns home to host Kansas in a midweek game on Tuesday, April 16 at 6:30 p.m. in TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
