EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Creighton baseball team claimed the opening series in Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) play with a 6-2 win over Evansville in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday, March 23.
The Bluejays are 12-5 on the season and 2-1 in MVC play, while Evansville fell to 9-14 overall and 1-2 in conference.
Creighton jumped out on the Purple Aces in the top of the first on a leadoff single by junior Brad McKewon, a sacrifice and an RBI knock by sophomore Jake Peter.
After Evansville knotted the game with a run in the second, freshman Reagan Fowler blasted Creighton's first extra-base hit of the series to push the Jays out by two, 3-1. Peter opened the inning with a walk, then junior Mike Gerber laced a single to left. After a ground out moved the Creighton runners to second and third, Fowler connected for a double into left.
Evansville inched closer with a run in the bottom of the third, but Creighton answered with one in the fifth on three two-out singles from senior Alex Staehely, Fowler and senior Brennan Murphy.
The Jays tacked on two insurance runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
On the mound it was the Creighton bullpen that proved dominant. Three Bluejay relievers (freshman Matt Warren, senior Mark Winkelman and junior Bryan Sova) combined to toss 6.2 innings of scoreless relief. Warren earned the win, allowing three hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Creighton returns to the diamond on Wednesday, March 27 as Creighton heads to Iowa City, Iowa to face the Hawkeyes at 6:05 p.m.
