CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Despite homers from junior Mike Gerber and senior Alex Staehely, the Creighton baseball team suffered a 9-8 loss to Austin Peay in the Riverview Inn Classic on Saturday, March 9.
The loss dropped the Jays to 5-3 in 2013, while Austin Peay moved to 12-2 overall.
Down 2-0 entering the top of the second inning, the Jays exploded for five runs on five hits and a walk.
Junior Mike Gerber opened the Bluejays' second with a single up the middle. Senior Alex Staehely followed with Creighton's first home run of the season over the left field wall to tie the game at 2-2. After a walk to freshman Reagan Fowler, senior Brennan Murphy continued the hit parade with a bunt single along the first base line. Two outs later, junior Brad McKewon ripped a two-run single to right to make it 4-2. McKewon promptly stole second, then raced home on an RBI single to center by junior Federico Castagnini.
Austin Peay got two runs back in the bottom half of the frame, but Gerber led off Creighton's third with the Jays' second long ball of the game.
Single tallies by the Governors in bottom of the third and the sixth inning tied the game at 6-6, chasing Bluejay starter senior Nick Musec.
Creighton reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh on a Gerber walk, a sacrifice and an RBI single from Fowler. Austin Peay, however, tied the game with a run in the bottom half of the frame. The Governors took advantage of Creighton's third error of the game in the eighth to plate two runs, taking a 9-7 edge.
Down to their final at-bat, Gerber and Staehely drew walks. After Fowler forced Gerber at third, Murphy reached on an error to load the bases with just one out. Senior Jordan Makovicka drew the Jays within one via a bases loaded walk. Creighton's rally, however, came up just short as senior Michael Blatchford struck out and McKewon grounded out to end the game.
Junior Bryan Sova suffered the loss (1-1) for the Jays, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit in 0.2 innings of relief.
Austin Peay's Tyler Rogers nabbed the win (3-0) out of the pen, limiting Creighton to one run on three walks in 1.1 innings of work.
Offensively Staehely led the Jays, going 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Gerber, meanwhile, was 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Creighton returns to action on Sunday, March 10 as the Jays wrap up play in the Riverview Inn Classic, hosted by Austin Peay, with a 11 a.m. contest against UW-Milwaukee.
