St. GEORGE, Utah - Three unearned runs in the fifth led to the first
loss of 2013 for the Creighton Baseball team as the Jays fell to BYU, 9-0, in
the first game of a doubleheader on Friday, March 1.
The loss dropped the Jays to 3-1 in 2013, while BYU moved to 6-5 overall.
Creighton missed a scoring opportunity in the opening frame as junior Federico
Castagnini smacked a one-out double to right, then sophomore Jake Peter
drew a five-pitch walk. Unfortunately junior Mike Gerber
bounced into an inning-ending double play.
The Bluejays returned the favor in kind in the bottom half of the first as
starter, junior Nick Musec,
got out of a first and third jam via the pitcher's best friend a 5-4-3 double
The game remained scoreless into the bottom of the fifth when the Cougars
took advantage of a two-out error to plate three unearned runs and take a 3-0
BYU tacked on three more runs in both the seventh and the eighth innings to
claim the 9-0 win.
Cougar starter Desmond Poulson limited Creighton to just five hits over
eight innings, recording six strikeouts and just one walk, to pick up the win
Musec was a tough luck loser (0-1), allowing three unearned runs on five
hits and one walk in 4.2 innings.
Five Jays finished with one hit, including doubles by Castagnini and senior Alex Staehely.
Creighton and BYU will play the second game of their doubleheader at 3 p.m.
