PEORIA, Ill. - Juniors Alyssa
Kamphaus and Sarah
Nelson combined for 35 points to lead the Creighton women's basketball team
past Bradley, 80-65, on Saturday, Feb. 23.
With the win the Jays collect their 20th win of the season to go to 20-6
overall and 12-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC). Bradley,
meanwhile, fell to 11-14 on the season and 5-9 in MVC play.
It is the seventh time in head coach Jim
Flanery's 11 seasons that Creighton has reached the 20-win plateau.
In the Jays' previous 29 seasons it had been done just eight times.
Kamphaus set the tone for the Jays in the opening five minutes by dropping
in Creighton's first nine points to force Bradley out of its five-guard lineup
that started the game. Kamphaus' play opened up the outside for junior Jordan
Garrison to drain the Jays' first three and extend Creighton's lead to 12-7
with 14:42 to play.
Up 12-9 moments later, Nelson went to work on the block. Nelson
dropped interior buckets around a layup by Garrison to push the Creighton
advantage to 18-9.
The Jays went on to score 24 points in the paint in the opening period to
take a 44-28 lead into halftime.
The second half started just as the first period had, with Kamphaus and
Nelson leading Creighton on an 11-3 run. Up 55-31 the Jays never looked
back allowing Bradley no closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
Nelson led Creighton with 18 points, while Kamphaus finished with
career-highs in points (17) and blocks (4). Three other Jays finished in
double-figures as senior Ally
Jensen had 15 points, while Garrison posted 11 and freshman Marissa
Janning delivered 10.
Bradley had three players finish in double digits led by a game-high 19
points from Michelle Young. Katie Yohn chipped in 15 points and Brooke Bisping
finished with 11.
The NCAA leader, Creighton dropped in 13 three-point field goals in the
contest 13-38 (46.3%).
The Jays face travel partner Drake in their lone game next week as Creighton
hosts the Bulldogs on Sunday, March 3 at 2:05 p.m.
