OMAHA, Neb. (Feb.
19) - The Creighton women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 setback to
Arkansas-Little Rock Tuesday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
Sophomore Jennie Hartjes posted her third-straight
singles victory to lead Creighton (1-4) at the No. 1 singles spot. On court
six, Liz Vermillion registered her first singles win of the season to give the
Bluejays its second point of the contest.
UALR (8-2) notched its fifth consecutive win and fourth
straight on the road. The Trojans claimed an early 1-0 lead after taking the
first two doubles matches.
On doubles court one, the Creighton tandem of senior Anna
Kirshenbaum and junior Analese Snyder fell 8-4 to UALR's Yana Kakovkina and Viktoriya
Plyuta. The Trojans claimed the point on court two as Michaela McShane and Veronique
Luksich downed CU's Hartjes and freshman Sam Anderson 8-4.
Creighton sophomores Amanda Noonan and Vermillion were
tied at 6-6 on court three against the Trojan duo of Dané Vorster and Kamilla Galieva
when the match was halted.
Hartjes continued her impressive play at the top singles
spot as the first Bluejay off the court with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Luksich.
Vermillion put Creighton ahead in the match at 2-1 with a singles victory on
court six. She toppled Christel Amsallem of UALR 7-5, 6-2.
The Bluejays came up short in some tight singles matches
on the remaining four courts. Three of the duals went three sets but the
Trojans were able to sweep all four to secure the win.
CU's Anderson won the first set 6-2 on court five over
Vorster but the Trojan returned the scored in the second set before claiming a
6-1 in the deciding set to tie the match at 2-2. Down a set, Snyder fought back
to force a third stanza with a 6-2 set two decision but could not hold the
momentum against UALR's Kakovkina, falling 6-2.
Galieva clinched the team match point for the Trojans on
court three with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Kirshenbaum. Noonan also forced a decisive
set on court four, winning set two at 6-2 after dropping the opener 6-3, but Plyuta
posted a 6-1 win in the third for the Trojans' final point.
Creighton treks to Lincoln later this week for a
neutral-site match against No. 64 Wyoming at 10 a.m. Friday at the Nebraska
Tennis Center.
