ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Freshman Marissa Janning claimed her third MVC Newcomer of the Week honor on Monday, Feb. 18. The award recognizes Janning for her play during the week of Feb. 11-17.
Making just her third start as a Bluejay, the freshman celebrated Valentine’s Day by making her mark on Bluejay history with a new Creighton record for points scored in D.J. Sokol Arena, 26 points, in the Jays’ 67-51 win over Missouri State. The Watertown, Minn., native was 8-for-17 from the field, including 6-of-11 from beyond the arc. The six treys tied another arena record.
Two days later, Janning delivered 12 points to help Creighton upend Wichita State, 56-46. Over the two contests Janning was a combined 11-of-26 from the field with five rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Janning's last MVC Newcomer of the Week honor came on Dec. 10, 2012, while she nabbed her first on Dec. 3. With three Newcomer of the Week honors, Janning remains six behind the record nine awards claimed by teammate Carli Tritz during the 2010-11 season.
