OMAHA, Neb. (Feb.
16) - The Creighton women's tennis team scored a 5-2 win over North Dakota
in its home opener at the Hanscom Tennis Center Saturday night.
Creighton (1-2) won the doubles point and four singles
matches to secure the victory over UND (1-8) as four Bluejays claimed their
first singles victory of the year.
In doubles action, the Creighton duo of sophomore Jennie Hartjes
and freshman Karlin Naslund cruised to an 8-1 win over Callie Ronkowski and Sarah
Stejskal of North Dakota. CU's pairing of junior Analese Snyder and sophomore
Amanda Noonan clinched the doubles point on court three with an 8-2 defeat of
UND's Megan Sween and Shaylin Prout.
Play on doubles court one was halted when the Jays earned
the point. At the time Creighton senior Anna Kirshenbaum and freshman Sam
Anderson held a 6-3 advantage over Stephanie Biehn and Stephanie Petsis of
North Dakota.
Creighton sophomore Taylor Koehrsen quickly rolled out to
a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Prout on singles court six to put the Bluejays up 2-0.
At No. 3 singles, Kirshenbaum also made quick work of UND's Ronkowski 6-4, 6-0
to give CU another point.
CU junior Analese Snyder clinched the team match point on
court two to give the Bluejays the victory. Snyder slipped past Biehn in the
first set 7-5 before doubling up her opponent in the second stanza, 6-3.
Three singles matches went the distance with three-set
decisions. CU sophomore Jennie Hartjes claimed the first three-set win. At No.
1 singles, Hartjes beat Petsis 6-2 in the first before falling in extra games
at 7-5 in the second stanza. In the deciding set Hartjes rolled to a 6-1 win to
claim the Jays' final point.
North Dakota claimed the final two matches of the
evening. CU's Noonan took the opening set from Sween 6-3 on court four. The UND
player fought back with a 6-3 win in set two and finished off the match with a
7-5 victory in the final set to make the score 5-1.
UND's Stejskal also claimed a three-set win at 7-5 in the
third over Anderson. The visitor won the first set 6-4 before CU's Anderson evened
the match in the second stanza 7-5.
Creighton continues a three-match home stand with its
first conference match of the season on Sunday. The Bluejays host Missouri Valley
Conference foe Illinois State at 11 a.m. on the Hanscom Tennis Center courts.
