OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's basketball squad exacted a measure of revenge with a 56-46 win over Wichita State on Saturday, Feb. 16.

The win lifted the Jays to 18-7 on the season and 10-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC).  Wichita State, meanwhile, dropped to 17-8 overall and 11-2 in the MVC.

As they did in the first meeting, Creighton jumped out early on the Shockers building an 11-4 lead in the first seven minutes.  Five different Bluejays got on the board during the run, led by a three-ball from junior McKenzie Fujan. In the first meeting on Jan. 19, the Jays scored the first 11 points of the contest.

The Shockers responded with 17 of the next 23 points to seize the lead at 21-17 with 4:29 remaining in the half.

A three-pointer from the right corner by junior Carli Tritz, stabilized her squad.  Down 25-22 moments later, Creighton closed the half on a 7-0 over the final 2:22.  Junior Alyssa Kamphaus got the Jays rolling with a layup from the right off an entry pass from freshman Marissa Janning.  Following a defensive stop, Janning found junior Alexis Akin-Otiko on the left side of the bucket to give Creighton a 36-35 lead.  Janning capped the run with a trey from the left corner, thanks to a quick assist by Tritz.

Leading 29-25 coming out of the break, Creighton continued to roll in the opening moments of the second period.  The Bluejays scored nine of the first 11 points to push their lead to 11 at 38-27 with 16:30 on the clock.  Once again it was an interior bucket by Kamphaus that got the Jays started, she completed the three point play to make it 32-25.  A Shocker bucket made it 32-27, only to see Janning and Fujan drain three-balls and give Creighton its largest lead of the game.

Wichita State chipped away at the Jays advantage over the next six minutes, closing it to a one-possession game at 41-38 (10:01).

That, however, was as close as the Shockers would get as Akin-Otiko dominated the final 8:29.  The Bellevue native scored nine of her team-high 13 points down the stretch to secure the win for the Jays.

Joining Akin-Otiko in double figures was Janning with 12, while Wichita State's Michelle Price led all scorers with 15 points.

Akin-Otiko and junior Sarah Nelson cleaned up on the boards, posting a game-high eight rebounds.

Creighton returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 21 as the Bluejays head out on their final road trip of the season at Northern Iowa at 7 p.m. Two days later Creighton will face Bradley in Peoria, Ill. at 2 p.m.
