TEMPE, Ariz. - The Creighton softball team earned a split against two teams receiving votes in the preseason National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll Friday by upending Oregon State 5-3 after a 13-3 setback to No. 14 Florida earlier in the day at the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State.

Senior Amy Baker led the Creighton bats with a homer in each game, going 3-for-5 on the day with four runs batted in. Fellow senior Sammy Snygg hit her fourth career homer against Florida in game one while freshman Kelsey Allender posted a pair of hits in the nightcap versus Oregon State.

Creighton (2-2) opened the scoring against Oregon State (1-2) in the bottom of the first. Junior Ellen Homan walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After junior Alexis Cantu walked, both runners advanced on a ground out before Homan scored on another OSU wild pitch to give Creighton an early 1-0 lead.

Junior Brittany Telecky got the start against Oregon State. The Beavers posted two runs to take the lead in the top of the second. After a leadoff single and then a double, OSU scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1. Another wild pitch scored another Oregon State run from third to put OSU up 2-1.

After two scoreless innings, OSU padded its lead with a run in the top of the fifth on a solo home run to right center field to increase the Beavers' lead to 3-1.

Creighton answered in the bottom of the frame when Allender led off the inning with a single through the left side. A walk to Homan put two Bluejay runners on. Junior Blair Lowe bunted the runners into scoring position on a sacrifice. Two batters later with two outs on the board, Baker cranked her second homer of the day to give Creighton a 5-3 lead at the end of five.

Neither team scored in the sixth as OSU prepared for its final at-bat in the top of the seventh. Junior Becca Changstrom took over for Telecky in relief to secure the win. After a leadoff single, the Beavers could not advance a runner to second as Changstrom struck out the final OSU batter to earn her first save of the season. Telecky earned her first win of the year in her first start of 2013.

Earlier in the day, CU took on No. 14 Florida. Changstrom started against the Gators as UF sent out Lauren Haeger against the Jays.

Florida opened the scoring in the top of the first after a leadoff triple followed by a single to put the Gators up 1-0 early.

Baker registered the first Bluejay hit with a leadoff homer to left to tie the game in the bottom of the second inning at 1-1.

UF moved ahead in the next frame on a solo home run to put the Gators ahead 2-1 heading into the bottom of the third.

Changstrom posted six strikeouts through the first three innings but the Florida bats kept active adding three more runs in the top of the fourth on a three-run homer to make it 5-1. UF exploded for eight runs in the top of the fifth, including a grand slam, to take control of the contest at 13-1.

Creighton kept fighting in the fifth as senior Ashley Frutos reached first after a passed ball on a called third strike. Snygg came on to pinch hit and blasted a homer to left center to make it 13-3 in the final scorebook.

Changstrom took the loss to drop to 1-1 on the year.

No. 14 Florida improved to 1-0 with the win in its season opener.

The Jays wrap up the Kajikawa Classic with its final game of the tourney early Saturday at 10:30 a.m. CT against Stephen F. Austin of the Southland Conference.
