SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Led by 15 points from junior McKenzie Fujan, the Creighton women's basketball team downed Missouri State 73-53 on Monday, Jan. 21.
The win lifted the Jays to 13-4 on the season and 5-1 in Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) play. Missouri State, meanwhile, fell to 9-8 overall and 1-4 in MVC action.
The Bluejays never trailed as Creighton opened the game on a 13-6 run, keyed by three-pointers from Fujan, senior Ally Jensen and junior Sarah Nelson. The Jays went on to hit 12 of their first 18 shots as Creighton pushed its lead to 31-15 with 8:51 remaining in the first half.
The Jays, however, went cold down the stretch, missing 13 straight to allow the Lady Bears to pull within eight at 31-23 with 2:07 left. Fortunately freshman Marissa Janning found her shooting touch at the right time, sinking a crossing layup and a half court heave off the glass at the buzzer to send the Jays into half with a 36-25 lead.
Janning's bank shot provided all the momentum Creighton needed in the second half as the Bluejays opened the period with a 13-4 run to push their lead to 20 points at 49-29 with 14:30 remaining. Missouri State got no closer than 15 points the rest of the night.
Fujan's 15 points led all, while A. Jensen finished with 12 points and Nelson posted 10 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.
Creighton finished 13-of-32 from beyond the arc. It was the third time in six MVC games that the Jays knocked down at least 10 three-point field goals. Overall Creighton has hit 10 treys or more in seven games this season.
Creighton returns to the court on Friday, Jan. 25 as the Bluejays host Northern Iowa at 7 p.m. in D.J. Sokol Arena.
