BROOKINGS, S.D. - Behind a career-high 11 points from senior Jasmin
Corbin, the Creighton women's basketball team defeated South Dakota State
63-54.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 1-1 on the season, while the Jackrabbits fell to
1-2.
After junior Alyssa Kamphaus got the Jays on the board first in the opening minute
with a bucket down low, SDSU rattled off five straight to claim a 5-2 edge with
17:53 to go in the opening period. Senior
Ally Jensen rallied her troops with a three-pointer, igniting an 11-0 run over
the next two minutes. Juniors Carli
Tritz and McKenzie Fujan each added three points during the run, while Corbin
capped the run with a layup to make it 13-5.
Following another Jackrabbit burst that cut the Jays’ lead to 13-11, junior
Sarah Nelson gave the Jays some distance with a bucket followed by two free
throws. Creighton went on to extend its
lead to as much as 11 points at 27-16 and took a 27-19 lead in at halftime.
South Dakota State displayed the resolve expected of a conference champion, opening
the second half on a 10-5 run to pull within three at 32-29. Corbin responded with her first trey of the
evening to push the Jays back out by six, but SDSU’s Megan Waytashek answered
with a three-pointer to make bring the game to 35-32.
Once more the Bluejays responded with a 9-1 run behind buckets by A. Jensen,
Kamphaus and Nelson and finally another three-pointer by A. Jensen to make it
44-33 with 10:16 to go.
The Jackrabbits had one more run left in them keyed by a zone defense that
plagued the Jays in the final moments of the first period. South Dakota State employed a 2-1-2 zone to
force three turnovers and get back within striking distance at 50-46.
Once more it was Corbin who answered the call, draining back-to-back
trifectas to shoot the Jackrabbits out of the zone defense. Corbin’s final three gave her a new
career-high of 11 points as she propelled the Jays to the nine-point win.
Tritz led the way for Creighton with 13 points, while Corbin and Nelson each
finished with 11 points. Corbin also
posted a career-high six steals, while Kamphaus and A. Jensen led the Jays with
seven rebounds.
Waytashek led South Dakota State with 14 points, while Gabrielle Boever
chipped in 10 points.
Creighton returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 20 as the Jays travel to
Vermillion, S.D. to face the USD Coyotes at 7 p.m.
