PEORIA, Ill. (Nov. 9) - The No. 12 Creighton men's soccer team edged Drake 3-2 in double overtime in a Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Men's Soccer Championship semifinal hosted by Bradley in Peoria, Ill., Friday afternoon.
Creighton freshman Vincent Keller scored his second goal of the season in the 107th minute to give the Bluejays a come-from-behind victory. Sophomore Eric Miller and senior Brent Kallman assisted on the winning score.
With the win the Jays improved to 14-3-2 on the season while Drake dropped to 6-11-4 after the loss. Creighton will face the second seed SIU Edwardsville in the conference final match Sunday at 1 p.m. CU is seeking its 13th MVC Tournament title on Sunday.
In the first half, Creighton missed a chance at a goal in the 28th minute after a shot by junior Sean Kim got past DU goalie Rich Gallagher but the Bulldogs made a team save at the line to keep the game scoreless.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first in the 33rd minute as Brian Grand scored his second goal of the season from the left side to beat CU goalkeeper Jeff Gal and give Drake a 1-0 lead.
Creighton went into the locker rooms down for just the third time of the season carrying a 1-1 record in the previous two instances.
After the break the reigning MVC Player of the Year and current MVC Freshman of the Year paired up to knot the game at 1-1 for Creighton. Senior Jose Gomez blasted a shot past Gallagher on a feed from freshman Timo Pitter in the 56th minute.
The goal was the fifth of the year for Gomez and the third helper of the season for Pitter.
Just 34 seconds later, Creighton took a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute. Miller scored his first career goal off of a header. Sophomore Jose Ribas recorded his sixth assist of the year on the score.
However the Jays' lead did not last long as Drake's Michael Thaden knotted the score at 2-2 in the 60th minute.
It took just over 47 minutes to decide the match in the 107th minute when Keller scored his first career game-winner to give Creighton the 3-2 victory.
CU freshman goalkeeper Jeff Gal improved his record to 10-0 on the year with the win.
Creighton will face SIUE in the MVC Tournament final on Sunday at 1 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Net, including Fox Sports Midwest.
