Cedar Falls, Iowa - The Creighton women's soccer squad wrapped up the 2012 regular season with a 1-0 loss to Northern Iowa on Thursday, Oct. 25.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 3-12-2 overall and 0-6-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC), while Northern Iowa improved to 8-9-1 on the season and 3-2-1 in MVC play.
On a very cold night in Cedar Falls, wind played a big factor in this match. The Panthers played with the wind in the opening period and made the most of their opportunity as Northern Iowa fired off four shots and created two corners in the opening 16 minutes of play.
The 18th minute, however, proved to be the decisive one as Northern Iowa's Sam Copley notched her first goal of the season. Copley fired a deep shot off a Bluejay defender which then skipped past senior Katie Jo Swanson for the only goal of the game at 17:03.
The Panthers managed just one shot in the final 28 minutes of the opening period and three in the second frame for nine total.
Creighton seemed to gather themselves following Copley's goal, firing off four shots in the first period and eight in the second. The Jays also created 10 corners in the final 73 minutes;
unfortunately Creighton was unable to find the equalizer.
Freshman Maddie Trebesch was one of five Jays two close the game with two shots as Creighton outshot Northern Iowa 12-9 in the game. The Bluejays also finished with a 10-6 edge in corners.
The Bluejays will look to put their disappointing regular season behind them and start anew this Sunday as Creighton faces Drake in the MVC Tournament Quarterfinals in Des Moines at 1 p.m.
